April 10, 2023

Mancala is a type of board game that has been played for centuries in Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. The game is also known as “sowing” or “count and capture” games, and there are many variations of it, each with its own unique set of rules. Mancala games are typically played by two players, and the objective is to capture more pieces than the opponent.

History of Mancala

The history of mancala can be traced back thousands of years. The earliest evidence of the game comes from ancient Egypt, where archaeologists have found game boards carved into stone tombs. The game was also played in ancient Rome, where it was known as “calculi.” Mancala spread throughout Africa and the Middle East, and today, it is played in many parts of the world.

How to Play Mancala

The basic rules of mancala are simple. The game is played on a board with two rows of holes, called “pits.” Each pit contains a certain number of game pieces, such as seeds, stones, or beans.

At the beginning of the game, each player has a store, which is a larger pit to the right or left of their row of pits. The object of the game is to capture as many pieces as possible and move them into your store.

The game begins with one player picking up all the pieces in one of their pits and sowing them counterclockwise, placing one piece in each pit as they go. The game continues until one player no longer has any pieces in their pits.  The player with the most pieces in their store at the end of the game wins.
